Here are a few helpful facts about the “average” American from the Federal Reserve.
Median family income is $70,300.
Median family net worth is $192,900.
66.1% of American families owned a home.
42% of families held a debt tied to their home — like a mortgage or home equity loan.
22% of families had student debt with a median value of around $25,000.
Two-thirds of working-age families participated in retirement plans.

Since 2009, all have had a salary of $174,000 - (a few leadership positions get paid even more money).
Median net worth is $1.53 million for senators & $454,000 for representatives.
2% of senators & 13% of representatives had student loan debt.
All members of Congress who serve at least five years are eligible for annual pensions. These pensions kick in starting at 62 years of age and are roughly an average of $45,000 per year - on top of any Social Security, private retirement accounts or other federal employee retirement plan benefit plans.
